Irish Tenors to sing holiday repertoire at Van Wezel

/ Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Finbar Wright, Anthony Kearns and Ronan Tynan have been touring together as the Irish Tenors since 1998, with sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall and Carnegie Hall, among many other places. Their faces and voices are familiar to PBS audiences through several specials, including the “Ellis Island Project” that sold a million CDs and DVDs.

The threesome will sing holiday music Dec. 18 at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

The Irish Tenors will perform Sunday evening at the Van Wezel.

“The Irish Tenors brand is strong; it’s recognized,” said Kearns in a recent phone interview. “You have three guys singing together. Individually you can hold your own, but collectively it’s something powerful with tight harmonies.”"

The tenor voice is the most romantic of the male vocal registers, said Kearns who has sung with Opera Naples for the last two seasons and will sing the title role of “Faust” in February.

“The baritone is the hero or the bad brother; the romantic part goes to the tenor,” he said. Thus, the Irish Tenors’ audiences lean toward the women.

“If the ladies go out to see the show, they drag their unwilling husbands and partners,” Kearns said.

The tenors’ Christmas show will open with traditional Irish repertoire before moving into Christmas fare, he said.

“The first half is Irish Tenors, it’s our stamp, you can never tire of it, you can never run out of it,” he said. “We have an unbelievable repertoire to get through.”

The Irish songs speak to people around the world because “the music is from a land of hardship, a land that has suffered down through the years,” Kearns said. “From the ashes the phoenix rises and people find a way out of trouble and out of situations like this. They work together as a team, they share the stories and the passion and the music an the dancing. The culture is very strong. That’s what the Irish have transferred to the four corners of the earth.”

The trio will sing selections from their most recent holiday CDs, “We Three Kings” and “The Irish Tenors Christmas,” including such songs as “Winter Wonderland,” “White Christmas,” “Fairytale of New York,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and “Silent Night.”
