Former Bolshoi director’s company to make unpublicized stop on U.S. tour

/ Tuesday, February 7, 2012

UPDATE/EDITOR”S NOTE: The press person called today (Wednesday) to tell me they were disappointed in tickets sales. Well, no wonder! I didn’t hear about this until yesterday and when Iwent to the Van Wezel today to purchase a seat (watch for the review next Monday) it took me 10 minutes to convince the woman in the box office that yes, this event was taking place Sunday night and yes, the Van Wezel was selling tickets! Sheesh!

The company led by 85-year-old Yuri Grigorovich, who dominated the Russian ballet scene for more than 30 years, will make a little publicized stop on its 2012 U.S. tour at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall at 7 p.m. this Sunday, Feb. 12.

The Grigorovich Ballet will present “Legends of Russian Ballet,” a program featuring highlights from some of the most familiar ballets in the classical repertoire, including dances from Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and Don Quixote. Barring visa issues, more than 50 dancers are expected to perform, including Alexandra Sivtsova, Tatiana Vladimirova, Anna Zhukova and Vladimir Morozov.

Grigorovich was artistic director and principal choreographer for the Bolshoi Ballet from 1964 to 1994, when he was ousted from the position after being accused of allowing the legendary company to stagnate. Thereafter he choreographed for several different Soviet companies before settling in Krasnodar and forming his own troupe in the summer of 1990. Grigorovich was married to the late and great ballerina, Natalie Bessmertnova, who died in 2008.

Tickets for “Legends of Russian Ballet” range from $20 to $100 and are available by calline 953-3368 or (800) 826-9303, or online at www.vanwezel.org.
